How It Got Started
This market was started by farmers who yearned for a place to sell their products in an efficient manner. When a market is more focused on it's "festival-like" or "food court" qualities...does it really help the local farmer? In our experience, it hasn't. We want Acadiana to have access to something different.
Why Farmers and Ferments Only?
Incorporating local produce into your diet is essential for maintaining good health, as it ensures you're consuming fresh, nutrient-rich foods that haven't lost their vitality through long-distance transportation. Most produce in your grocery store is already 2 weeks old by the time it's reached the shelf. Yikes!
Ferments are a perfect complement to a locally sourced diet. You know, a Fermentationist is really the same as a farmer. They cultivate and nurture living organisms (bacteria & yeast cultures) just like a farmer who raises crops or livestock. They carefully manage and monitor the growth and health of their microorganisms. You could call it a "micro-herd".
Fermented products, like kombucha, support a healthy gut and bolster the immune system. Fermented grains, like sourdough, break down gluten and phytic acid, making it easier for the body to digest and absorb nutrients.
What Are the Benefits?
Real farmers markets play a crucial role for our Acadiana economy. Your support of local farmers keep money circulating within our community....Not flowing through the big box stores and into products that are inferior, or worse for your health.
We want you to have easy access to fresh, seasonal produce that is more nutritious and full of flavor. We want this market to create a sense of community, by bringing people together and educating everyone about the importance of where there food comes from. By choosing to shop at Le Bon Marché, you get what's good for you.
